This was 2013 on Shoegaze Love - A year in words, pictures and music.

2013 is almost over. It's december. I love this month not only because of x-mas but also because it's the time of the year where you get a little bit quiet and take a look on the year that almost passed.
There's also snow sometimes and I love snow as long as it's still december and not march ant there is still a bunch of snow everywhere!!

How some of you guys noticed I created a little poll on facebook and asked: "Who should become Band of the Year on Shoegaze Love?"
First: Thanks to all of you guys voting for your favorite bands.
Here are the results:

1. Ummagma

I guess they are the most likable band in the universe and their music is just awesome. They just released their Single "Rotation/Live and Let Die" and I fell in love immediately. And so did you guys. Congratulations Alexander and Shauna and thank you for the never ending support for this blog and the Shoegaze Scene in general. I love you!

2. Venera 4

On second place you voted Venera 4. This band is kind of my personal Hype of the year! They did so well. After their Release of the Single "Haunted Summer" in april they got me. The EP was even more awesome and I'm excited for the hopefully upcoming album next year. They also released a little christmas gift for everyone calles "Winter Sessions". Enjoy!

3. Hermetic Delight

Hermetic Delight got voted and third place and they deserve it. They are doing a more noisy kind of Shoegaze and I'm in love with that. The EP is amazing so download it right now!!

Of course I also made up my mind about my personal Band of the year.
- - - drumroll - - -

Westkust
This sweet little band absolutely hit right into my heart! They only released two songs this year but they had everything I needed for my august 2013. Thank you guys for creating this little piece of heaven.

The next band is called Zeit. They are from Sweden and just send me this little piece of heaven. So check them out! I love how they describe their music:

"pop music that makes you feel like you`re traveling through a long-abandoned ghost town, with a body full of tranquilizers."
The next ones joining today's Shoegaze Love are Lights That Change. Lovely electronic shoegaze pop. In Looooooooove!!!!!
There are two places left so I added the track 'A Face in the Wall' by Computer Room. The man behind the music is called Kevin Erhard. So check out his expermiental version of shoegaze music.

Last but not least Power Pyramid from Oklahoma City with their Album from September. It's for free download and just awesome!
So enjoy all of the bands and never stop sending me great music!

About Cartoon Heroes and Lou Reed

Well. I don't know what to say. This won't become one of the thousends "Lou was my hero" posts. I don't really know what this will become. I just started writing without thinking. So let's wait what will happen.

To be honest. For me Lou Reed already died one year ago...
My friend Lisa asked me in Summer 2012 if I would like to come to the Lou Reed concert in our town. She was working for the Rolling Stones Magazine as a promo girl. So she got 2 tickets to the concert. I said "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!". We went there and we were excited as hell. When I met the father of my boyfriend there I first realized that we might have been the youngest persons in the whole audience.

Whatever. We wanted to have the best places to see and hear everything. We felt like teens on a Justin Bieber concert (WTF! I just mentioned Justin Bieber on my blog!?)
Well. He came out and the first thing I said to my girlfriend was: "He's old!" You might think: Of course he's old! But for me he always was kind of a character in my favorite cartoon. I never thought about him as a man, as a human!
The Band started to play. I guess the third song was a Velvet Underground song.
Evereybody in the audience was going crazy. They seemed to love it. I was confused. What the hell was going on here? He didn't hit a note. His guitar play was terrible and I started to realize that he's the same age as my grandfather (but my grandpa can play guitar much much better!!).

I was carrying a book with me in this time. I got it with me all the time. I wrote down what was coming to my head. After I heared about the death of Lou Reed, the first thing I did was to look for the book! I found it and on the page I went to the Lou Reed concert was a note saying: "Lou Reed is dead."

Yesterday Lisa posted something on facebook. I didn't hear about the news so far. The post said: "Lou Reed is dead". The first thing that came up to my mind was. "Yeah. I know. We noticed this one year ago. Why is she posting this on facebook now?"
After everybody on facebook started posting "R.I.P Lou Reed". I was shocked.

It was like the second when we were at the concert and realized that he was old! I couldn't even imagine this! But now he's dead. I mean HE'S REALLY DEAD!!

I don't know what to say.
He was my hero until that concert. He died for me last year. Now that he's really dead he might become my hero again. I know it sounds weired. But maybe for me he had to die to get back to this cartoon character he was for me. Cartoon Heroes never die!

And I am the Water Boy, the real game's not over here
But my heart is overflowin' anyway
I'm just a tired man, no words to say
But since she lost her daughter
It's her eyes that fill with water
And I am much happier this way.
(Lou Reed: "The Kids" from the album "Berlin" 1973)

Outside Shoegaze Wonderland: Riot Grrrls & stucked back Grunge Guys

Hey Boys and Grrrls.

We're doing a little trip today. I want to show you another place I call home.
I'm a shoegaze girl. I live in Shoegaze Wonderland. But sometimes I like going out and take a drink with some friends in a cute little bar at the corner. Let's call it "BitchTown".
I call it this way, 'cause most of the girls, called a "bitch" are girls, who behave in an inadequate way.

I'm a Riot Grrrl. I play guitar in a Riot Grrrl Band called poor little rich girl. We're loud and we're not like the other girls and it sound like this:

I'm a feminist. And I'm not ashamed to say this out loud!
Every woman should consider herself a feminist. I believe in
equal opportunity.
Just do, what you wanna do and be proud. Don't let anybody tell you, you're not good enough because you are a girl. You can do everything you want. EVERYTHING.
Or how Courtney would say:

Most people outside Bitch Town may think about the old times back in the 90's when hearing about Riot Grrrl stuff: "It's dead!"
I'm in love with the old stuff. And Rock'n'Roll is not dead because the King left us decades ago, right!

So, when I go out to drink some beer with my girls, we're talking about the new hot stuff out there in Bitch Town.

Last friday we talked about a band called I'm a Sloth from Vienna.
One Girl and two Boys in love with 90's Grunge and Punk Rock attitude.

They released their first album "Satisfashion" in 2012.
They are young and in love. In love with Noise, Sonic Youth, Beer, Hole and the whole 90's grunge thing.

Of course they were too young when Kurt Cobain died and Sub Pop was (like really!) independant. So what?
They don't seem to copy things they saw on television when they were 4. They are authentic, real and honest kids, doing what they want to and give a fuck about what's in charts right now. They won't start the new Grunge Revival though, but listening to the LP I feel like 16 again. When I listened to Grunge Music the first time and was like "OMG, I was born at the wriong time." It makes me blue.

But back to I'm a Sloth. One thing I really like about them is the female and male vocals. They are adaptable. The one moment they sound like Melvins. Deep and dark. The next one they are L7. Punk Rock and Pop at the same time. I like it. I really do.

The guitar voicings are changing to much in my oppinion. Sometimes it reminds me of myself, when I got my first guitar ... However in Songs like "Employee Of The Mounth" they should ask Thurston Moore if he wants his sound back.

I hope I'm a Sloth will be able to release their next album very soon. I'm excited and dancing in my room while listening to the last song "Different". Hopefully they'll find their own sound and get support for Hole when Courtney is touring Austria again. :)

next shows:

Sept 9th @ Fluc | Vienna
Oct 14th @ Arena Beisl | Vienna
Jan 9th @ Noise Fest (B72) | Vienna

New Song "Rebirth" by YUCK

YUCK just released their new track "Rebirth"!!
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH.
I fell in love with the band when my boyfriend showed them to me some years ago. They didn't even bring out an album yet but 2 great Demo-Songs.
Some years later it happened that my band JAGUWAR went on tour with them and they are so great people and an awesome live band.

After Daniel (singer/songwriter/guitarist) left the band there were many voices telling that without him it won't work out. BUT they proved them all wrong!
I love the new song. It's more shoegaze then the first record and that's always great, he?
And the title matches perfect. So check it out and show the guys some love.
You can also download the song for free here.

I hate TV 'cause it makes me sick.

Hey.After I did my last Video Action I received a lot of submissions. Thank's to all of you. They are all great and I'm happy to show them to the world.
In my eyes Music Videos are still important. Fuck MTV and all that crap. But art in any forms always come best together. So if you have the opportunity, grap a camera and put something together. It doesn't need to be highly produced. Everybody can do it.
Keep on.

Shoegaze around the world: France

Hello world.

Today I start a new post-series called "Shoegaze around the world".
There are so many awesome shoegaze bands from all over the world.
So take your time and check this. Maybe you're new favorite shoegaze band is right around the corner.

So I start with France today!
A great big country and a lot of bands. However a bunch of french Shoegaze bands told me lately, that Shoegaze's not the shit in France. Well, I got you kids. Same here in Germany. But keep on and people will follow. I promise! Sometimes it just needs some time and people will understand thet Shoegaze is the most amazing music style ever invented!

The first band I want to entrust to you is FUTURE. Two guys from Paris creating noise walls in the tradition of A Place To Bury Strangers. They just released there new EP "Abyss" and it's just awesome. I love the voice of bassist Yann Canévet and the electric drum sound matches perfect with the reverb guitars. They just bacame Band of the Week on Shoegaze Love.

Not to forget the officiating Band of the Week - VENERA 4. They released their new Single "Haunted Summer" as an advanced song of their upcoming 2nd EP on wednesday this week and it just blew me away! The band consists of two boys and two girls and they also live in Paris. I love female voices so if you do too, this band is a little treasure you should not pass over.

Next band in the corner is DEAD HORSE ONE. They released their Debut album "Heavenly choir of jet engines" in march this year over Cranes Records. The voicings and the sound in general is really warm and powerfull and sometimes reminds me of Oasis. This guys have a feeling for great pop-songs and are more psychedelic then shoegaze but I don't mind. Just great!

MOUNTEBANK is a shoegaze band from Limoges. In March this year they released the b-side track called "Imagineerie". Their sound is more lo-fi and reminds me of the early My Bloody Bloody Valentine Stuff. Guitars are right in the front and sometimes it's a little dream-poppy.Sweet. They also work with drum-mashine how many shoegaze bands nowadays do.

Well, that's it so far. Tell me about your favorite Shoegaze band from France. I'm sure there are so many more out there I missed.

OMG!! this girls are amazing. Rock'n'Roll into your face!

Girls Girls Girls

Today's International Women's Day - the perfect day to remind you people out there how many great female musicians were involved in great shoegaze, noise pop etc. projects from when the shit started on til today.
I always wanted to be one of them and show the world that it's not your gender making you a great musician, but talent and effort.

As I'm a real fucking Riot Grrrl (also tattood on my feet!), I want to encourage girls to take a fucking guitar or some drumsticks and just start playing. Just have fun and be loud. Give a fuck about what people say and just be yourself. You're great the way you are and everyone telling something different is a dumb-ass liar!

So first step:
Most of the musicians who influenced me when I was a little girl and made me want to be a rockstar were women. The next photos show the most important ones for me. Don't care if they are shoegaze or not. NOIZE!!

Bilinda Butcher (My Bloody Valentine)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten and many other projects)
Amanda Palmer (Solo, The Dresden Dolls)

Brody Dalle (The Distillers, Spinnerette)
Emilie Autumn (Solo)
Björk (Solo, Sugarcubes)

Courtney Love (Hole, Solo)

These are just a few impressions. The list could became endlessly long conaining nearly every Riot Grrrl of the early 90's, Patti Smith, Kate Bush, The Girls of Lush and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, ...

One thing making me really happy the last years is, that more and more women start founding bands and create some really great music. Some of the next ones I show you are already more popular then others, but they are all great and worth to check out. Thats why I will post a bandcamp link to the ones I guess you may not know so far.

Tamaryn (Solo)
Alex Gehring (Ringo Deathstarr)
Mariko Doi (YUCK, Parakeet)
Dum Dum Girls
Vivian Girls
Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast)

Candelilla (candelilla.bandcamp.com)
Luise Pop (luisepop.bandcamp.com)

Katarina Trenk (Sex Jams - sexjams.bandcamp.com)

Nan Turner (Schwervon! - schwervon.bandcamp.com)

There are also a lot more great women I adore.
I just hope you'll never forget:

"Girls invented Punk Rock not England!"

Cheers.
